It’s common to be worried when your child is a l It’s common to be worried when your child is a late talker, but the more telling skill is combining words. Children who show a delay in this area are more likely to have ongoing language needs than children who simply said their first word late. (I expect 2 year olds to regularly use two word combinations.)

Who finds this research true in real life? 🙋‍♀️
There’s a bit of magic that happens around the t There’s a bit of magic that happens around the time a child has 50 words, but up until then it can feel really, really hard, like you’re fighting for each and every one. 😅

It actually gets easier! Once a child has 50 consistent words in their repertoire, they will start combining them (which makes it more likely you’ll understand what they are asking for or talking about) and they often start acquiring even more words at a faster rate!

(One caveat, if a child is only gaining a bigger and bigger vocabulary of nouns it might take longer. There’s just no easy way to make functional combinations with a list of, let’s say, vehicles names. That’s why I place such a big focus on action words. We’re always looking ahead to future skills!)
Ok, for this one you have the option to get a litt Ok, for this one you have the option to get a little messier 😉 If you add about an inch of water, you can float a foam lilypad and work on prepositions with frogs and turtles. They can rest on the pad or hide under in, jump in the water or out of the pond.

Can’t deal with the water? Consider adding just a few drops in the bottom of your container (strictly for fun) and cut your lilypad big enough to be a “lid” for the container. Voila! The same activity without the fear of spills.

Which do you prefer—frogs or turtles?
Splash splash baby’s taking a bath 🛁 Our 4th Splash splash baby’s taking a bath 🛁 Our 4th non-messy water play idea 💡

Rather than fill a bath, just put baby in an empty bath container and add a damp washcloth. Still lots of sensory experience without the fear of spills.

Of course we’ll target:
🛁 body parts
🛁 action words like wash, scrub, dry, clean, rub, wipe
🛁 opposite pairs like wet/dry, clean/dirty, front/back (of body)
🛁 sequencing/social story: undress, get in the water, clean, get out and dry off, go to sleep

Just like in my Miss Wishy Washy activity where the littles LOVE wiping soap out of eyes, typical “drama” here is also appreciated. Soapy eyes, standing in the tub, watching out for the tub spout and not splashing water on the floor makes for lots of discussion 😉
My kids loved going to the drive-thru car wash and My kids loved going to the drive-thru car wash and watching the “rainbow” soap and the brushes go along the side of Vanessa (our minivan). Set up your own carwash and watch the language bubble up! 🫧

I have the Fisher Price carwash, but you can easily make one by cutting an opening in the side of a shoebox and adding fringe with yarn, a foam sheet or ribbon.  Add a spray bottle (honestly, you can add a little water and put the nozzle to “off” and the kids still love it), some cars and you’re all set 🚘

You can target:
🫧A variety of vehicle vocabulary. We washed a school bus, police car, garbage truck and car.
🫧Parts of a whole like wheels, lights, roof, windows.
🫧Action words like drive, scrub, dry, wash, push, spray.
🫧Size and color concepts depending on what kinds of vehicles you have.
🫧“Not” by adding items that don’t go through the carwash like people, food and animals!
🫧Directions by asking for a specific vehicle or adding in other actions like “wash the car and then give it gas” or “dry the car then open the doors.”

Be sure to save and check out my other easy water play ideas! 💦
Mrs. Wishy Washy washes the cow, pig, and duck on Mrs. Wishy Washy washes the cow, pig, and duck on her farm, but in my room we wash all the farm animals! We also only use the cow’s rhyme because we like it best 🧼 (Change the animal name and sound as needed.)

“Whishy washy wishy washy
Mooo the cow cried
I hate this old tub
I’ve got soap in my eyes.”

Pro tips:
💦 Just use the first few pages of the book especially with young ones. It’s all you need.
💦 Use a TINY amount of water to minimize spills/mess.
💦 Have a towel underneath and/or nearby for littles who don’t like “wet”
💦 Get comfortable with mess 😉

Adding something a little different to your sessions tends to being out lots more language and increases engagement. Water is an EASY way to do this!
This is one of my favorite activities especially o This is one of my favorite activities especially once the weather gets warm! Cut a pool noodle into short lengths, stick a small scrap of red/yellow/orange fabric in the top and, voila! Watch the excitement as your little firefighter puts out the flames 🔥 (Nervous about using water? I’ve found lots of my littles are down with an empty bottle or a bottle turned “off” though I prefer to have a little in there and it set to “spray”)

You can work on:
🚒 Concepts big/little
🚒 Opposites wet/dry, hot/cold, fast/slow (truck), up/down (ladder)
🚒 Turn taking (with the truck and/or the spray bottle)
🚒 Action words: drive, spray, help

Hit ❤️ if you know a little one who would enjoy this activity!
