Understanding prepositions or spatial concepts all

Understanding prepositions or spatial concepts allows little ones to be successful with following directions. Without them, they’re likely to interact with the right item, but not seem to follow through or struggle to use your assistance.

For example, walking around with their cup but not setting it on the table.

Or wandering around looking for their shoes that you said were under the chair.

So next time you think “he doesn’t listen” consider if spatial concepts are a part of the issue.

In my experience, “between” and “next to” are the most difficult. That’s doesn’t mean I haven’t worked on the difference between “on” and “under” a lot! Which do you think is hardest?

Got a late talker? Focus on communicative intents! Whether your child is using gestures, vocalizations or is starting to use words (even if they aren’t very clear yet), we want them to use language to:
⭐️ Make requests
⭐️ Comment
⭐️ Protest
⭐️ Answer/respond

Communicative intents are about the way a word (or attempt) is used and can be done with single words. The situation, tone and inflection let’s us know what their intent is!

What you can skip (for now) are the academic skills like colors and counting. While these are helpful later, we need to make sure our little ones understanding how language can be used first.

Feeling a little overwhelmed with the expectations for Kindergarten? If you have a late talker or language delayed little one, it might not be realistic to expect mastery of all the “should be able to” items. (Check yesterday’s post for the list.)

Streamline your focus. Help them communicate their wants/needs. Work on following simple directions. Practice common classroom routines at home like opening their own lunch items, packing up their backpack, sitting on a designated space (use a placemat) to listen to a story, and sitting at a table to color/cut/paste/etc. for 5-10 min.

This has been SO FUN! I’ve been using this I Spy

This has been SO FUN! I’ve been using this I Spy game for over a month. Mostly with artic and phonological processing kids, but for social skills too. My young friends looove looking for all of the little miniatures, especially the toilet 🚽 🙄 and it’s challenging enough for my big kids to enjoy it too ⭐️

A few tips:
✅ Use your carrier phrases to target articulation goals
✅ Each color has the same miniatures, so pull out a few colors if you need to make the search easier.

Many of the I Spy cards have rhymes which is a fun way to add some phonemic awareness practice. I’ve also been having students make associations between items on the card(s) for language practice.
