Some little ones come in rarin’ to go, but a lot Some little ones come in rarin’ to go, but a lot of toddlers and preschoolers are going to be skeptical around new people. How can you build rapport faster so you don’t waste valuable sessions in a push-pull of participation?

⭐️ Talk warmly to their caregiver(s). Little ones might not understand what you’re saying, but they can tell when you’re genuine. Convey respect for and interest in their adults. Avoid talking about a child’s deficits or struggles in front of the child.

⭐️ Get at eye level. Kneel or sit rather than (literally) talk down to a little one.  Communicate in simple language even if it means making assumptions about abilities beyond their current comprehension.

⭐️ Be patient! Moving slow with an unhurried demeanor will get you going much faster than rushing or pressure to participate.

⭐️ Allow their caregiver to stay and don’t remove preferred toys. Incorporate both into your session if you can! Allow the child to direct the activities.

⭐️ Give your undivided attention as much as possible. Keep child interactions focused on the child. Save significant caregiver instructions for after the activity (you can make occasional comments, but try to maintain attention on the child).

I see students year round so someone is almost always “new.” Any tips you’d like to add?

Nope! SLPs are trained to assess delays well befor Nope! SLPs are trained to assess delays well before three years old and early intervention makes a HUGE difference in outcomes.

Children under three are developing very quickly. Waiting to see if your child will “catch up” on their own often means a much wider gap in skills plus a very frustrated child (not to mention caregivers).

Speech therapy for children under three years should look like play and focus on caregiver training so you can practice at home. There won’t be any flashcards!

How old was your child when they started speech/language therapy? I have a lot of 18 month to two year olds on my caseload!

How do you feel about end-of-the-year gifts? While How do you feel about end-of-the-year gifts? While I don’t think they’re necessary, as a private therapist working in the schools I do take advantage of opportunities to thank students and families for their trust and commitment. This year it was pinwheels for the littles and Ring Pops for the big kids. I’ve never done candy before, but it’s all I had the energy for this year.

Body parts are early vocabulary words and important for our little ones to know so they can (eventually) express feelings of discomfort and autonomy.

Little ones don’t need flashcards and quizzes to Little ones don’t need flashcards and quizzes to learn language, but they do need books! What’s the difference?

📖 Reading books is a shared social activity (flashcards puts the adult in control)
📖 Books often have a story line that helps little ones learn sequencing (beginning, middle, end)
📖 Vocabulary in books is viewed in a natural environment and in relation to other objects/places/people (flashcards have pics with little reference)
📖 Being read to fosters interest in learning to read (other than a study technique, flashcards don’t have ongoing utility)

Developing a regular reading habit has benefits that keep on going!
