Screenings are NOT your best referral source! When you do screenings you end up going to caregivers with the news their child is behind and you’re the one to help.

But they don’t know or trust you yet! ❌

It makes for awkward, salesy conversations 😝

Word of mouth referrals are what you want! If you are in regular conversations with caregivers of current students (yes, especially if you’re in the schools) they will recommend you to friends 🌟

That, my friend, is how you start a side hustle.

Screenings start for me next week and I have a whole bunch of 3- 5 year olds to see. While screening days usually have me dazed on the couch by 8pm, I actually like doing them. The opportunity to see so many "typical" speech & language kids helps me keep some perspective about my littles with delays.

If you work with kids, you probably spend the majority of your time planning fun, engaging activities for them, but (suprise!) they aren't your customer. Caregivers are.

Caregivers want to see progress, but more than that they want:
⭐ information about speech and language
⭐ ideas for helping their child at home
⭐ tips on how to make their life easier (as related to speech/language challenges)
⭐ regular updates on progress or challenges

Think this only applies to private practice SLPs? Nope. School SLPs have customers too! And they include at home caregivers and teachers.
