Hey, do you remember why you got into the field in Hey, do you remember why you got into the field in the first place? Are you stuck in a vicious cycle of hating your job, but staying “for the kids?” Feeling trapped because you have a degree (and loans) in a career that doesn’t actually make you happy. There are ways to step out of the spiral and back into joy ❤️

Check out these tips for avoiding SLP burnout on the blog.
There’s so much about our jobs we can’t contro There’s so much about our jobs we can’t control—room location, caseload, challenging administration. But we can focus on what will maximize our personal success and health. Establishing healthy habits, ideally before you go back to school is an easier path than you think.

⭐️Gratitude: Focus on where you do find joy and peace
⭐️Healthy Eating: An actual lunch will do wonders for your energy level. Find a couple options you won’t mind having on repeat.
⭐️Drink Water: Another way to boost your energy and health.
⭐️Workout (or not): Either find something you like to do or finally release the “should.” An item perpetually on your to-do list that fills you with dread and guilt is only derailing your mental health.
⭐️Streamline mornings: Pack your bag. Lay out your clothes. Set up the coffee. Don’t let a frantic morning set the tone for your day.
⭐️Stop Working: Use cues to let you know it’s time to STOP working and then stick with them!

It feels uncomfortable when you’re secretly comp It feels uncomfortable when you’re secretly comparing your child to others in an effort to reassure yourself. Let’s take a look at some data instead.

There is a wide range of typical when it comes to speech development and it takes longer than most people realize for little one to develop a mature speech pattern. Take a look at expected clarity (which is most important) as well as development of speech sounds.

When did your little one start talking? In my experience “late talkers” initially need a little extra time to improve their clarity.

Still concerned? Talk to a speech-language pathologist! We start working with children early, you don’t need to wait until 3 years. Most kids love going to speech and therapy is very effective. In the US, you have the option of going to a private clinician or reaching out to your local early intervention for services.
Sensory play is important year-round, but summer i Sensory play is important year-round, but summer is a particular good time to take advantage of the opportunities for it!

Sensory play is experiential and incorporates the senses. Activities like:
☀️Making mudpies
☀️Splashing in puddles
☀️Going down a slide
☀️Swinging
☀️Digging in the sandbox
☀️Smelling the flowers or fresh cut grass
☀️ Tasting a popsicle

What experiences does your child enjoy? Which ones do you bring in your therapy room?
When you see the BTS displays are you filled with When you see the BTS displays are you filled with hope, optimism and excitement for the new year? Or do you indulge in fantasies of what you wish your career was like? Maybe you’re filled with dread and kind of look the other way.

I’ve been an SLP for over 25 years and it pains me that so many of us are operating with a constant deficit of joy in our career.

Most of us get into the field to help others, but we struggle with helping ourselves. You guys, it has to stop.

I’ve been exploring some of the ways you can keep up momentum, in our field or others, on my blog. Tomorrow I’ll share specific tips you can implement before school starts again.

It’s time to feel some joy ⭐️

Littles love to look at photos of themselves, so try making one that stars them doing different activities. It might be just the motivation an unsure child needs to attempt something new.

Summer is a particularly good time to assemble shots from exciting family events—the beach, the zoo, parties—which are particularly motivating. My own little ones loved to look at books from zoo trips and would bring them back on repeat visits to match the pics to the animals.
