Lily Pad Leap for pronouns and prepositions

Although most of the country may not believe it, we are starting to move into the spring months. In like a lion, out like a lamb?  Please, March, please?  And Punxsutawney Phil, what happened?  Off day?  Regardless of the actual weather, I’m looking to bring a little spring into my sessions. Fake it ’til we make it.

Materials:

Empty tissue box (I covered mine in green constuction paper and added some flower stickers to each “bank”.  I lined the bottom of the box blue to represent the water); cut a 1” slit in each top corner so it can hold a card

Frog cards (white if preposition only, copy onto light blue and pink paper if addressing pronouns)

Frog direction cards (and pronoun cards if needed)

To play (prepositions only):

Beginner: Place 1-2 frogs in the water, and 1-2 on the bank. Deal remaining frog cards (white). Be sure the “pond” is oriented the same way for all players. Preposition cards are shuffled and placed face down in the center of the table. On your turn, select a preposition card and place the frog according to the directions.

Competitive: Deal all frog cards (white). Preposition cards, plus the four “Oh, no!” fish cards, are shuffled and placed in the center of the table. On your turn, select a preposition card and place the frog according to the directions. “Out of the water,” “Off the bank,” may put a frog back in your hand! If you draw, “Oh, no!” take any frog back from the pond into your hand. The object is to get rid of all your cards.

All the preposition cards have picture and written prompts.  Prepositions include:  in/out, on/off, next to, beside, under, beneath, behind/in front.

To play (pronouns and prepositions):

Preposition cards are shuffled and placed face down in the center of the table. One set of pronoun cards is shuffled and placed separately on the table. On your turn, select a pronoun card, then a preposition card and place the frog (s) according to the directions.

Competitive: Deal all frog cards (pink and blue). Preposition cards, plus the four “Oh, no!” cards, are shuffled and placed in the center of the table. On your turn, select a pronoun card and then a preposition card and place the frog according to the directions. “Out of the water,” “Off the bank,” may put a frog back in your hand! If you draw, “Oh, no!” take any frog back from the water into your hand. The object is to get rid of all your cards.

There are two possible pronoun decks.  One is plain white.  The other is color coded for additional prompting (she/pink, he/blue, they/yellow).

***Bonus:  This game includes “Polar Bear Plunge” the winter themed version of the game as well.  It’s a great way to incorporate seasonal activities and work on carry-over too!
